THE annual Bloodwise UK charity golf day took place at Garon Golf Club yesterday - with plenty attending to offer their support to the extremely worthy cause.

Over a hundred people took part in the event, raising much-needed money for the charity.

The event was hosted by Duncan Holland who tragically lost his daughter, Gemma, as well as her friend Matthew Mullins to the disease.

The pair both died of leukaemia, aged 12 and 16 respectively.

Mr Holland began fundraising following Gemma’s tragic death in 1997.

The charity day has raised £182,000 over the last 15 years for Bloodwise, who research blood cancer.

Despite a wet morning after a full breakfast, plenty of golf was played followed by afternoon drinks, a dinner and a raffle.

The families of the pair are regular fundraisers for Southend Hospital.

They hold an annual walk in order to raise funds for the Elizabeth Lowry Ward at Southend Hospital.

The ward offers treatment to those suffering with various cancers.
