A ZEBRA crossing planned for a junction where an 83-year-old woman was killed has been delayed as a row rumbles on.

Greta Mara was killed crossing the Mitchells Avenue, Canvey, after visiting a coffee morning at the Salvation Army Hall in February 2014.

After her death, many more residents came forward to say that they had also had near misses on the road.

A petition was set up calling on Essex County Council to put in a zebra crossing. The authority finally agreed to the proposals last year.

It will cost between £45,000 and £65,000 to install and will be located on Mitchells Avenue just south of the junction with Smallgains Avenue.

However, Canvey Independent Party councillor Dave Blackwell, has revealed that the crossing is once again delayed.

He received an email from the Local Highways Panel. It reads: “Please accept my apologies for the delay in the installation of this crossing.

“This was initially delayed due to the delay in delivery of the lamp columns required for the zebra crossing.

“We have now encountered further delays due to issues with gaining the required works permit for erecting new columns near to existing overhead power cables.

“We are also reliant on UK Power Networks to provide the electrical connections for the lighting columns.”

A new installation has been set for Wednesday, July 12.

Mr Blackwell said: “It is ridiculous.

“I was told it would be April, and then June and now July.

“People need this crossing

“It is very frustrating that it hasn’t been installed yet.

“I can’t believe it is taking so long.

“Contacting the utility company should have been done long before they had even started the crossing.”

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “There have been some delays to the start of work caused by supply issues and safety concerns around nearby overhead power cables.

“Construction on the zebra crossing is now scheduled to start on July 12.”
