COMMUNITY organisations across south Essex have been given thousands of pounds in funding to help enrich people’s lives.

Canvey Bay Watch, Leigh-on-Sea Endeavour Trust, South Downs Allotment Association and Supporting Carers and Families Together were among 22 charities and voluntary organisations to receive grants at the Essex County Council’s Millennium and Chairman’s Fund Awards.

Councillor John Aldridge, chairman of Essex County Council, gave Canvey Bay Watch a £2,500 grant to build a disabled access path and disabled bays at Thorney Bay beach.

Barry Campagna, chairman of Canvey Bay Watch, said: “This is so that people of all abilities can enjoy the seafront and beach.

“Three years ago the area was in such an appalling condition that people had stopped visiting.

“As local residents we decided to try and clear the area and seafront.

“We started with eight volunteers and now there are 20 of us.

“No matter what the weather we meet every Tuesday and do whatever work is necessary to keep the area accessible and make it a nice place for people to visit”.

Supporting Carers and Families Together will receive £2,750 towards the annual salary of new member of staff to work with young and adult carers in Rochford.

Andy Trewern, service delivery manager, said: “We have seen a surge in demand for our services over the last two years and we are extremely grateful for the grant we have been awarded from the Essex Millennium Fund.

“This funding means we can continue to support local carers, increase their confidence and make sure no one feels like they are alone.”

South Downs Allotment Association was given £750 to replace a shed and equipment at an allotment site in South Benfleet.

The Leigh-on-Sea Endeavour Trust was given £1,965 for equipment for educational programmes.

The funds, managed by the independent charitable trust Essex Community Foundation (ECF), provide support for community and voluntary organisations whose good work enhances the lives of people living in Essex.

At the presentation event, Mr Aldridge said: “It is a privilege to be in the position where I can learn about the Essex voluntary sector and I can honestly say that my time spent visiting groups has been extremely heart-warming.

“I have been most encouraged to see local people coming together with a common aim of making their own community spaces a better place to live and work for all.”
