CAMPAIGNERS have had their say after Theresa May signed a letter confirming Britain's intention to leave the European Union

In triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, Mrs May has started Brexit and begins a two year negotiating process about the terms of Britain's exit.

Tim Aker, Ukip MEP for the East of England, called it "a memorable day for our country".

Mr Aker, a borough councillor, said: "Even though it took nine months, Britain has finally given notice that she will leave the European Union.

"Now it is up to the Government to deliver Brexit on the people's terms. This means full control over our borders, our laws, our fishing waters, our money and trade.

"The Government have already shown willingness to continue to pay Child Benefit to EU migrants and continue access to British fishing waters without compensation.

"We need to keep a close eye on the negotiations and exactly what the Government is willing to barter. We will not accept anything but a clean Brexit. It's what the people voted for."

Alex Mayer,  has described the triggering of Article 50, the formal process for the UK to leave the EU, as "a deeply sad day when Britain finds itself on the wrong side of history."

Ms Mayer said: "As Britain prepares to leave the European Union I fear for our future prosperity and place in the world. This is a backwards step which ultimately will make our country weaker, poorer and more isolated.

"Local businesses face huge uncertainty about Britain’s trading relationship with Europe as Theresa May tries to dump the UK out of the single market, a decision which was never on the table during the referendum.

“Right across our region people need answers. The Tory Party has once again been seized by the hard line Europhobes. They say they want to take back control but in reality they are destabilising Britain and putting us out of control.

"Their inability to grasp reality, compromise and work constructively with our nearest neighbours means we are in very real danger of leaving the EU with no deal at all.

"That will play havoc with our prosperity.”
