VISITORS to Tilbury Fort this weekend will get to witness the spectacle of a regimental training day by the 44th East Essex Regiment.

The living history and re-enactment group, which represents one of the famous British Army Regiments of the early 19th Century, will be at the English Heritage site on Sunday February 26 from 11am-4pm.

Dressed in full re-enactment attire, visitors will get to see the group take part in parade training and marching, battle techniques such as formations and musket firing.

Visitors will also be able to meet and talk to the group to learn about Napolenic history, as well as exploring the site which has protected London’s seaward approach from the 16th century through to the Second World War, and has more recently acted as the backdrop to the BBC One series, Taboo.

Dan Collard, English Heritage’s Property Manager at Tilbury Fort, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the 44th East Essex Regiment back to Tilbury Fort for their regimental training day. Watching the group training is always a great spectacle which our visitors really enjoy and we’re really looking forward to seeing them bring the fort to life once again this weekend.”

Henry VIII built the first fort at Tilbury and it was here that Queen Elizabeth I famously rallied her army nearby to face the threat of the Armada. Today the fort is the best example of its type in England, with its circuit of moats and bastioned outworks.
