THE hard work of pupils has been recognised at a special awards ceremony.

More than 100 awards were given out at Cornelius Vermuyden, in Canvey, school’s during its annual event.

The evening provides an opportunity for the school to recognise individuals who have excelled in different subject areas, as well as in their out of school activities.

Award winners included Callum Cuthbert, a Year 11 leaver, who picked up awards for Scientist of the Year, Top Examinations Overall, after gaining 11A*, 1A and 1B, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and deputy head boy.

Shannon Gonzalez, a Year 11 leaver, was awarded for Top Girls Examinations, French and deputy head girl.

Sonny Martin, 14, was awarded the Blessing Dzimati Memorial Trophy for Basketball.

Chloe Pettafor, a Year 11 leaver, got The Jordan Wickersham ‘Rising Star’ for Catering, which was presented by Nigel Wickersham, father of the late Jordan Wickersham, an ex-pupil of Cornelius. Nigel also presented Chloe with a experience in Jamie Oliver’s Restaurant ’15’.

Megan Shearman, Year 11 leaver, received the Paul Karlake Art Award. Megan also collected Awards for English Language, Triple Science, English Literature and Core Science.

The school was joined by several local dignitaries, special guests and sponsors, including the mayor of Castle Point, Stephen Cole, Martin Tucker, town mayor, Councillor Ray Howard, of Castle Point Council along with the board of governors.

Carol Skewes, headteacher, said: “All the pupils have demonstrated hard work, pride and determination that have enabled them to succeed.

“They richly deserve the recognition that they will receive from all of us this evening. This evening is my opportunity to say well done.

“That well done goes to everyone in this room. Well done if you are a pupil, well done to the teachers who have worked hard to help you and well done to your parents who have supported you.

“We welcomed back the high achievers - Callum Cuthbert last year’s deputy head boy and Shannon Gonzales deputy head girl who achieved 4A*s, 6As and 3Bs.

“In short, these outstanding results make Callum the highest achieving student in this school’s history and place him in the top 5 per cent of students in the UK.”
