A DENTAL practice which was infested with cockroaches has been ordered to improve.

Serious concerns were raised by the Care Quality Commission following a two-day visit to Elder Tree Dental Practice, in Elder Tree Road, Canvey.

Inspectors found correct health and safety procedures had not been followed following a cockroach infestation, which was uncovered in June.

Bosses were unaware the infestation, which began in the staff kitchen, had spread to other parts of the practice.

Inspectors found recommendations from a pest control firm on how to remove the cockroaches had not been put into action 27 days later.

As a result of the inspection on Wednesday, July 6, Elder Tree agreed to temporarily close the practice for three working days to clear it.

However, inspectors returned to find no guidance had been given to staff and no measures had been put in place to ensure the cockroaches did not return.

Overall safety at the practice was praised by the commission - but leadership was found to need improvement.

In a report, published this week, a commission spokesman said: “There was a lack of leadership and oversight at the practice.

“While some lead roles had been identified, such as staff leads for infection control, safety, risk assessment and equipment there were no systems in place for monitoring these areas.

“The principal dentist confirmed that they had not checked that policies and procedures in relation to infection control and health and safety were being followed.

“Most areas within the practice were visibly clean and clutter free. However, the practice did not follow the national colour coding scheme for cleaning materials and equipment in dental premises to ensure that equipment used for cleaning was specific to the area that was being cleaned.

“For example, equipment used to clean clinical areas was different to equipment used to clean the kitchen. The practice could not demonstrate appropriate storage and disposal of clinical waste.”

Despite the concerns raised, the commission found a health and safety policy, risk assessment and infection control policy was in place.

The Echo contacted Elder Tree Dental Practice for comment but did not receive a response.
