SOUTHEND “could be disrupted” and “holidaymakers impacted on” if industrial action is taken by easyJet pilots.

It has been revealed that easyJet pilots have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action over fatigue.

The British Airline Pilots’ Association, has announced that talks are now planned to try to resolve the row but Brian Strutton, general secretary of the pilots’ union, said there is still hope a resolution could be found.

EasyJet currently flies to 17 different destinations from Southend Airport and concern has been raised on how the action could impact the town and travellers.

Ann Holland, councillor responsible for culture, tourism and the economy, believes any action would have a detrimental impact on the town.

She said: “Obviously like any industrial action, it could cause disruption to holidaymakers and business travellers that rely on them. They will probably have to make other arrangements or find alternatives but it does cause disruption.

“I am also concerned about the fatigue, I guess that does need looking at as I wouldn’t want it to compromise public safety.”

Dawn Jeakings, of the Southend Business Improvement District, added: “Obviously, when anything affects the town it’s important we are aware. If people aren’t coming to and from the town that would affect the town but without knowing the details it might be a small effect or a big effect.”

According to the union 96 percent of airline members voted in favour, with a turnout of 88 percent.

A statement from an easyJet spokeswoman said: “EasyJet is committed to working with the union to find a resolution to the issues raised and we hope to reach a mutually agreeable solution. EasyJet can reassure its passengers that no industrial action is currently planned by its UK pilots.”
