A MOTORCYCLIST was airlifted to hospital after a crash.

The man, aged in his 20s, was riding a black Yamaha motorcycle along the A13 travelling towards Southend between Pitsea and Sadlers Farm shortly before 5pm yesterday.

The motorcycle was in collision with the barrier.

The rider was airlifted to hospital in London after suffering serious injuries, described as possibly life changing.

Traffic was queued in all directions and an air ambulance landed at the scene at about 5pm.

Shortly after 10pm, Essex Police confirmed the road would re-open "in stages" after the debris from the carriageway was cleared.

Diversions were put in place for drivers to use the A1245 while the road was closed.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "The rider was air lifted to hospital in London after suffering serious injuries, described as possibly life changing.

"The A13 was closed for several hours whilst the casualty was treated, vital forensic examinations were carried out and the road was cleared.

"Essex Police would like to thank motorists for their patience whilst this road closure was in place and for following the necessary diversions."
