A MAN is undertaking a 100-mile trek to support soldiers later this year - and has already raised almost £3,000.

Peter Nevill, 36, has signed up to The Frontline Walk, which takes in many of the most iconic battlefields and cemeteries on the Western Front, starting on the Somme and working its way through the now peaceful landscape and into Belgium, before finishing at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

The three day trek, taking place in October, is organised by ABF The Soldiers' Charity, which gives lifetime support to soldiers and former soldiers from the British Army, and their immediate families, when they are in need.

Mr Nevill, of Heybridge Drive, Wickford, said: "Both of my grandparents were involved in the Second World War.

"This is more to do with the First World War and we do have relatives who served during that war too.

"I donate money to Help for Heroes and I have been wanting to so something for charity for a while and I saw this and signed up."

The assistant facilities manager has already raised almost £3,000 for the charity and is determined to finish.

He said: "I work in London so it is quite hard to get a routine at the moment.

"I have been out for walks at weekends and did ten miles recently.

"We had our route through and the first day we are doing 23.1 miles.

"You just have to be reasonably fit and have the right shoes.

"Apparently everyone is really supportive and gets you through it together."
