The third Essex Energy Switch has secured over £175,000 of total savings on gas and electricity bills for Chelmsford residents.

The scheme works by bringing together residents who want to switch providers and pay less for their gas and electricity.

Run by Essex County Council in partnership with Chelmsford City Council and other district authorities, it is delivered through an independent agent called iChoosr.

In Chelmsford, approximately 522 residents signed up to the scheme and chose to switch to the tariff offered by iChoosr, a much higher percentage than the national average of 11 per cent.

On average, each city household signing up to the scheme saved £335.15.

Councillor Duncan Lumley, the City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “It is estimated that over 49per cent of those who signed up to the scheme had not considered changing tariff or supplier in over three years.

"As well as saving hundreds of pounds for many of our residents, the scheme raises awareness of energy saving and efficiency measures.

"For some, £355 could make a lot of difference in home heating during the winter.

"I am very pleased with the results for Chelmsford and I completely support the scheme.”

In total, 3,055 people switched to a cheaper tariff across Essex, saving hundreds of pounds on their utility bills.

Councillor David Finch, Leader of Essex County Council, said: “It’s great to see so many Chelmsford residents taking this opportunity to reduce their energy bills and save money.

"For those who have yet to take advantage of the Energy Switch scheme, they can sign up for the next switch that will be taking place this May and join the thousands of other Essex residents in taking control of their household bills.”
