JAZZ enthusiasts can look forward to a n evening of music featuring saxophones and keyboards this Sunday.

The first instalment of the new season of GC’s Jazz Club, at the Woolpack, in Mildmay Road, is set to go off with a bang as two local musicians take to the floor.

Zac Barrett, from Chelmsford, began playing clarinet at the age of eight, reaching the top grade eight with distinction within an impressive four years.

Aged ten, he took up the saxophone and has never looked back.

While at university in Manchester in 1995, he attended a jazz masterclass led by US drummer Ed Thigpen, composer Vince Mendosa and saxophonist Jean Toussaint, learning more about the style and jazz performance before returning to Chelmsford in 1999.

Here, he joined various jazz bands, including a jazz sextet, organised by GC’s Jazz Club organiser Graeme Culham, and the Reg Webb band, and has played in London’s Ronnie Scott’s with the Lol Williams band.

He will be joined by pianist Dan Banks, who is also a member of Mr Culham’s Jazz Sextet and plays other functions around Essex and Kent.

He is well-known for his compositions and is a versatile pianist.

Mr Culham will be joining the the musicians on the drums with bassist Ben Hearn.

GC’s Jazz Club takes place on the first Sunday of every month at 8.30pm.

Admission is free and food is available in the pub until 9pm.
