A homeowner was hit across the face with a telephone as his property was ransacked by a burglar.

The 62-year-old victim was at home in Plumleys, Pitsea, yesterday morning between 10.30am and 11.30am, when a man broke in.

The homeowner was assaulted and the entire house was ransacked, with items damaged including pictures, light fittings, ornaments and the television.

Paramedics treated the victim at the scene for minor injuries.

DC Emma Henderson, of Basildon CID, said: "This was a frightening unprovoked attack on a vulnerable member of the community.

"We are asking for any information to assist with the identification of the suspect that will hopefully lead to their arrest.”

The suspect is described as a white man with dark tanned skin, about 5ft 11ins tall and aged between 25 and 30.

He had dark cropped hair and wore a white T-shirt, blue shorts and white trainers.

He left the scene on foot and may have headed through the estate.
