An Inspector has offered reassurances about the Chelmsford being a safe place to go out in after three men were injured in a vicious assault.

The men were left badly hurt after being battered in Chelmsford city centre.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 30-year-old man from Chelmsford was left with a broken jaw after he was approached from behind and punched in the face.

A 25-year-old Brentwood man, who was also approached from behind, was punched and had his head viciously stamped on.

A third man, aged 28, from the Maldon area, was dragged to the ground and left with a broken arm.

Inspector Chris Kilgallen has urged residents and revellers visiting Chelmsford’s bars and clubs to “trust their instincts” and avoid confrontation to help stay safe.

She said: “Chelmsford remains a very safe place to live and serious incidents of violence associated with the night-time economy are rare.

“To stop yourself becoming a victim of any crime, the important thing is to remain aware and vigilant at all times.

“If your gut instinct tells you something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

“Learn to trust that instinct and take yourself away from suchasituation at the earliest opportunity.

“Actively avoid any confrontational situation.

“Remember, just one punch can be enough to kill.”

The attack, in which the three men were injured, saw police called to Moulsham Street after reports of a disturbance involving a number of men, which erupted in the early hours of Sunday, March 15.

The incident had started outside the Chicago Rock Cafe and moved to Baddow Road, near Pizza Express.

Two man, aged 23 and 36, from Chelmsford have been arrested in connection with the assault.

They have been bailed until May 7, pending further inquiries.

Witnesses and anyone with information is asked to call PC Ray Hull on 101.
