VOLUNTEERS spruced up a farm used to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities.

The Environment Agency sent 20 volunteer staff to the Hamelin Trust site at Sutton Bridge Farm, Rochford.

It is home to the Roots and Shoots programme which helps people with mental health and learning disabilities regain independence and grow in confidence.

David Knagg, Environment Agency operations manager said: “We are pleased to be able to use some of our annual leave to help clear the farm to help children and adults with disabilities enjoy the living environment.

“Some of our leave days each year are earmarked for working with communities to improve the environment for people and wildlife.”

The volunteers cleared the shoreline of the pond, cut down trees, tidied up the woodland and built insect hotels from wooden pallets, shrubs, moss and twigs.

Lee Argent, a volunteer for the day, said: “Carrying out this volunteering day makes me feel really humble, knowing that I am helping to make a difference.”

Nicky Evans, of the Hamelin Trust, said: “The work carried out on the day has made a huge difference to the site and will impact the individuals we support.”
