She couldn't go home for Christmas - but Basildon hospital brought home to her when a beloved pooch was allowed in the ward in a visit.

Neurological patient Yvonne Pearce - whose condition meant she had to stay in hospital for Christmas - asked to see her pet Lottie as 'the next best thing'.

Ms Pearce, 29, from Aveley, has been in Basildon University Hospital for the past three months with a neurological disease which meant she has lost sensation and the use of her limbs.

Despite working incredibly hard to build up her strength, disappointment struck when doctors decided she wasn't strong enough to go home for Christmas -

She has missed spending Christmas with her dad Peter, sister Laura and Lottie.

Yvonne said: “I wanted to go home for Christmas but this is the next best thing. I’ve missed her so much. It’s lovely feeling the warmth of her on my hands.”

Yvonne’s father Peter, added: “It’s all worth it just to see that smile on her face.”

Rachel Webster, senior nurse for the Trust’s patient advice and liaison service (PALS), said: “I asked her what the next best thing would be and she said she wanted to see her dog. It is very exceptional circumstances because Yvonne has been in hospital for such a long time and she needs that motivation to get better. I think Lottie’s visit today is going to do her a world of good.”

Lottie’s visit was carefully managed and pre-arranged, and they were reunited in the main reception of the hospital.
