A DOCTOR from Leigh has taken a flu jab selfie to encourage more people to take their free immunisation.

GP Peter Long of the Pall Mall practice in Leigh took the photo while having his annual flu jab, which is offered free of charge on the NHS to people who are at risk of developing serious complications from catching flu or who cannot care for loved ones of ill.

These including pregnant women, those aged over 65, children between two and four, those in residential care homes and carers for the elderly or disabled.

Dr Long said: “I know it might seem a bit of an odd thing to do but it’s so important people take good care of themselves and their family during the winter.

“Getting a flu jab is a big part of that, and I hope my selfie will remind people to get immunised.”

Melanie Craig, acting accountable officer for Southend NHS, added: “Not only will a flu jab help keep you well, but it will also reduce pressure on local health services if fewer people come down with flu over the winter.

“There are a range of places you can be immunised including your GP practice or many pharmacies.”
