A MEMBERS’ social club in Southend has had to change its name after being confused for a football fans’ club.
The Supporters Club was set up in Windermere Road 77 years ago, but in recent years, potential newcomers may have been put off by an association with Southend United.
As a result, the club will now be known at the Windermere Club and to celebrate the name change, they have given their clubhouse a facelift.
Club chairman, Bill Barker, said: “Potential members may have been put off, believing we were linked to local football.
“In fact we are a very modern, family oriented club, with traditional values.
“We are very conscious of the need to remain part of the local community and to provide quality products at competitive prices in pleasant surroundings.
“We have nothing against the football club whatsoever, but we wanted to make it clear to people in case they confused us with a Southend United supporters club.”
