A BOY knocked down on a crossing outside his Shoebury school had his phone stolen while waiting to be taken to hospital, it has emerged.

Josh Summerson, 11, a Year 7 pupil at Shoebury High School, was injured when he was hit by a blue Renault Clio while crossing Delaware Road, shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, November 19.

He escaped serious injury, but his parents have revealed someone stole his mobile phone while he was being treated.

Josh’s parents have thanked other members of the community for coming to their son’s aid and are hopeful he’ll be released from Southend Hospital soon.

But mum Michelle Summerson, of Delaware Close, Shoebury, revealed: “Lots of people helped out, but it’s sad that someone took the chance to take his phone.

“He’s a sensible boy and I’ve never had any concerns about him crossing that road before.

“He said that he can remember being at the crossing and a car coming from the west stopped, he saw nothing coming from the east so he went across, but he can’t remember anything after that.

“We live no more than a three or four-minute walk from where it happened, but I was so scared–we didn’t know what was going on until we got there.

“Josh had gone to art club after school and thankfully there were teachers from school seeing the kids out when clubs ended.

“We got a call from the school to say something had happened and rushed straight there. He’s got quite a few stitches in his head and knee, his chest is bruised and the wing mirror came off the car that collided with him, so he must have been hit with some considerable force.

“Fortunately, he didn’t break anything, but we are waiting on a surgeon to say he’s OK before we can take him home.”

Mrs Summerson particularly wanted to thank a teacher from Josh’s old school, Thorpedene Primary, where he was previously head boy, who came to their son’s aid.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to call them on 101.
