Political spat over Basildon bail hostel move

SOUTH Basildon MP Stephen Metcalfe has suggested he is happy for the controversial Felmores bail hostel to move to the town centre.

The Tory MP accused Basildon’s Labour group of blocking the move of the hostel, which houses sex offenders and some of the county’s most dangerous excons or suspected crooks, to a former car park, off Roundacre and Laindon Link.

However, Labour councillor Gavin Callaghan said the site had already been rejected by Malcolm Buckley, former Tory councillor for regeneration, and would not meet the requirements of the probation service.

It came after an email spat with Mr Callaghan, who is set to challenge Tory MP John Baron for his Basildon and Billericay seat at the General Election next May.

Mr Callaghan suggested Mr Metcalfe use an opportunity to question Prime Minister David Cameron in Parliament to ask the government for “a solid commitment”

to ensure the Ministry of Justice works with Basildon Council to find and fund a new site for the hostel.

Mr Metcalfe said: “My understanding of the current situation is I have done my bit and got numerous confirmed commitments to move the premises if an alternative site were found.

Basildon Council has done its bit and found an alternative site away from the problems with the existing site, so the only barrier is you and your colleagues blocked this going forward.

“I think rather than waste my question confirming what we have already confirmed, I would suggest you back the move to a more suitable site and stop trying to play politics with people's genuine concerns.”

Mr Callaghan said: “The probation service in its previous form was absolutely clear they would not move the hostel from one location which was near to schools, pubs and residential areas, to another location near to schools, pubs and residential areas. As a Loughton resident, I’m not sure how familiar you are with the geography of Basildon, but I can tell you, the site which was offered and outright rejected by Malcolm Buckley himself, would have immediately failed to get past go with the probation service.”

He said he believed it was worthwhile raising national awareness of the unsuitability of the current site through the question which would encourage the ministry to “actively engage in the relocation endeavours of the council.”

Biuld houses on that car park. The Council keep telling us that they have to build thousands of houses in the district and here's a prime brownfield site ripe for picking for taking some off that total and bringing an unused and recently troublesome site back into use..

Stop fannying around trying to win tiny little victories over each other in Council chambers and concentrate instead on trying to bring intelligent solutions to the problems and the needs of the district.

Mr Metcalfe, you should move the Hostel next to your home, which I guess isn't in Basildon. Our UKIP Councillor is objecting the move thankfully !!

Really well said.. you should be the local council officer although you clearly have common sense so you wouldn't fit in.

And it's Basildon UKIP that will sort the problem. Not rent a mouth Callaghan who keeps popping up all over the place like a jack in the box on speed.

If he spent less time congratulating himself on social media and pretending to clean up Beambridge (I was there a few days ago, can't see any difference) and more time learning some manners and social graces he might well make a very good street cleaner. In fact, I'd venture to suggest that Basildon's street cleaners would make far better candidates. They certainly do a better job of street cleaning than him.

At least they live in the real world and earn an honest living - and aren't gobbing off and gesticulating at other people and publishing lies and rumours about them on social media. Not to mention gesticulating and mouthing off at other politicians and myself during council meetings - and then having the barefaced cheek to issue a press release about my GENUINE question about him during the last one - and getting the chief exec and council solicitor to impose a ban on me asking live questions.

I did not shout, swear or hurl abuse, I just asked a question then him and his colleagues bawled and shouted, yelling at the mayor to shut up and stomped off out of the meeting. Callaghan did not return. The "behaviour" all centred on the Labour group throwing their toys out of the pram. As usual.

Then he made up some c0ck and bull about me bullying his girlfriend and family but unfortunately for him cannot show any proof for this lie either, since I haven't the faintest idea what his girlfriend or family even look like as he doesn't bring them to meetings anyway. I asked the council to produce some evidence to back up his claims but they have singularly failed - yet continue to let him behave appallingly in and out of the council chamber.. whilst doing exactly as he tells them.

That said, he barely makes any significant contribution to council meetings beyond making slit throat signs at the opposition and pulling faces. Totally juvenile.

Then he gets himself appointed to the Standards Committee, a body that has heard several complaints against him by members of the public and other councillors including independent Labour. Unbelievable!

And all this coming from Labour who like to pretend they believe in democracy and freedom of speech.

He can dish it out but can't bear anybody to question him. And by the way, for the less intelligent among you, there is no legal or constitutional precedent for my ban from live questions in public question time, so he's on a sticky wicket. The ombudsman will decide.

I shall, meanwhile, continue to attend council meetings. I reiterate, the story made the papers in the last week or so again because of HIS press release to try and discredit me.... and it spectacularly backfired didn't it Gav. I hope you enjoyed reading the papers yesterday. Not.

However, Callaghan's pretensions to winning John Baron's seat are, unfortunately for him, a pipe dream.

Only an idiot would vote in this loudmouthed, obnoxious bully, as I have heard extensively from locals who did not take too kindly to him turning up on their doorsteps during the run up to this year's elections, telling them what they should be voting. And he has upset politicians of all persuasions, even his own group, some of whom are too scared and cowed to admit it.

Well he doesn't scare me. Not with that level of intellect he doesn't.

When he learns some decorum, manners, wit, genuine charm and has some life experience behind him he might be halfway decent.

I'm not holding my breath.

Oh and Callaghan: who's paying for the taxicab with your mugshot on it?

Since you are always drawing everybody's attention to other councillors' expenses, like the mayor's portrait and chain for example, neither of which were funded by the public.

The point of this post? To let folk know just how much posturing claptrap this individual spouts off. Always posing in front of a camera and bandwagon jumping while other politicians get on with their jobs quietly.

Oh and as for trimming hedges and doing clean ups, UKIP have been doing that for a while WITHOUT the Echo splashing it in the paper.

Let's see how long it is before he phones the Echo and threatens them with a libel case unless they remove this post.

That's what he usually does. I don't care. I've had my say. And will continue to have it regardless of media, social media or otherwise.

Can someone please explain to me what Kim Gandys rant (even longer thna usual) has to do with the proposal to locate the bail hostel.

There was a TV programme recently where a council from somewhere up north took the step of taking some complainant to court to get them banned from both council premises and council meetings. Perhaps Baz council can do the same with the Gandy creature. She doesnt even live in the borough and yet stalks the council chamber as if she should be sitting in a councillors chair (as if Gandy!) and heaven only knows how much time is wasted by the council staff dealing with her enquiries. When you live in the borough you can comment on what goes on but until then please don't.

Just as a matter of interest Gandy where is the Mayors portrait? In her sitting room I suspect. Which as she has paid for it (or so you claim) is where it should stay.

But back to the post. The land near the Roundacre roundabout should be for housing. Build the Bail hostel in another part of town. Why not on an empty site on one of the industrial estates?

Laindon Shopping Centre is the most derelict place in the district and has been for far too long....
