A company from Witham have won lucrative contracts to supply glass to two of the most high-profile Olympic sites.

Village Glass, based on the Eastways industrial estate in Witham, sealed two contracts to supply glass to sites in the Olympic Village.

Glass manufactured at their Witham factory was used in the changing areas at the cycling velodrome, which was installed in December 2010.

And more recently the firm has been rewarded with a larger contract to supply glass for the viewing platform and ground level areas at the imposing Mittal Orbit observation tower situated next to the Olympic Stadium.

Managing director Neil Jesse, of Braintree, said: “Obviously this is a massively prestigious honour for us to get these contracts.

“The only slight disappointment is that, since we are not an official Olympic sponsor, we cannot have our usual ‘VG’ kitemark on any of the glass we supply for the Olympics.

“Nonetheless, the contract for the tower in particular is a very significant one for us, and we hope that we can work with the customer again in other projects in the future.

“It really shows how far we’ve come. When we started in the 1980s we had two full-time employees making units by hand, now we employ over 140 people.”
