As the Olympics kicks off, many athletes have been jetting in via Essex. Swimmers from Canada including world silver medallist Brent Hayden, about 80 swimmers from the USA, a mixture of athletes from Serbia, about 80 members of the Greek team and New Zealand’s judo team all flew into Stansted Airport. New Zealand 1,500 sprinter Nick Willis, Ireland's first female Olympic pole vaulter Tori Pena and South African 400 metre hurdler Cornel Fredericks also posed for photos after landing at the terminal. About 70 non-operational staff have volunteered and been trained to meet and gree the athletes on their arrival.
