Maldon’s housing crisis has left families living in cramped, privately rented homes with little hope of being allocated an affordable home.
The district council has admitted it will only ever house about 20% of people on the housing register due to the lack of affordable housing.
Yet, two weeks ago the council announced it only be delivering 3,000 new homes between 2014-2029 instead of the 5,955 target, which had been identified as necessary to meet the demands of an increasing population.
While the residents in the areas identified for 3,000 new homes are up in arms at possible future development, the families on a waiting list of more than 1,672 claim the lack of affordable housing is a “nightmare”.
