SOLDIERS raised £7,500 for Help for Heroes after running a marathon with 40lb of kit on their backs.

A 12-strong team from Colchester-based 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, the Royal Logistic Corps, completed the US Marine Corps’ marathon, in Washington, in just over five hours.

The cheque was handed to Help for Heroes at Colchester Garrison. The charity, which helps soldiers wounded in conflict, is building a £6.5million recovery centre in Fallowfield Road, Colchester. The centre is due to open in April. Marianne West, the charity’s co-ordinator, said: “We are thrilled by such a wonderful amount. The effort the soldiers put in is fantastic.”
