A robbery at knife point in a Braintree supermarket ended with a high speed car chase on the M11 this afternoon.

Police were called to Lidl on Rayne Road at around 3.40pm after reports a knife was held to the throat of a cashier.

A brave member of the public tried to block in the man’s black Ford Fiesta using his own car, but the man smashed his way free.

He was later arrested after being brought to a halt by police on the southbound carriageway of the M11.

An Essex Police spokesman said a 36-year-old man from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire is now in custody in Braintree Police Station after being arrested on suspicion of robbery.
