AN adrenaline junkie architect has smashed his own European cycling speed record - by accident.

Neil Campbell, 44, already set the record in June when he undertook the nail biting feat on his £10,000 custom-made bike.

He had reached a top speed of 135.3mph with his bicycle tethered to the back of a 2017 Porsche Cayenne at Elvington Airfield in North Yorkshire.

Neil, who works for ADP Limited architecture in West Bergholt, broke the record again on Sunday by reaching 149.160mph.

But the feat happened while Neil was practising for his world record attempt which is set to take place next year.

Neil said: “This was kind of a stepping stone towards that.

“This was really a training exercise for the driver. We have hopefully a car for the world record attempt, it is Europe’s fastest street legal drag car and the driver needed to be trained to pace in his car.”

Neil, of Polstead, cycled in the slipstream of a 177mph Porsche Cayenne Turbo, wearing a bespoke aerodynamic leather suit and a Union Flag helmet.

He revisited the same airfield for this latest record but was back at his desk for his day job yesterday.

Neil said: “We made quite a leap forward in speed but the bike performed really well.

“The driver was so efficient at what he was doing and the rest of the team.

“It really was a team effort and has given us a lot of confidence for the world record.”

The record attempts have taken place with the bicycle being released from the back of a speeding Porsche and Neil then pedalling furiously through a 200 metre finish line.

It is in this stretch his speed is recorded before grinding to a halt using the bike’s adapted motorcycle brakes.

Neil admitted the hardest thing was trying to stay relaxed at high speed, so as not to fall off.

“It is pretty exhilarating,” he added.
