There are miles of queues on the A12 northbound this afternoon after a crash.

The road is completely blocked between Junction 24, Kelvedon North, and Junction 25, Marks Tey, following a four vehicle accident.

Delays are stretching back as far as Junction 21, Witham North.

Highways England has advised Essex Police are currently at the scene of the crash.

A spokesman said: "There are currently delays of over 1 hour in the area.  "Traffic is being diverted via local routes. 

"Please allow extra time for your journey, should you be travelling in the area." 

UPDATE 3.18pm: 

Highways England now say the road has been closed between Junction 23 and Junction 24. 

Traffic is being diverted off onto the B1024.

UPDATE 3.27pm:

Essex Police remain at the scene of the crash.

A spokesman said: "We were called at around 1.55pm on Wednesday, August 8 to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on the northbound A12 between junctions 23 and 24.

"The road is blocked and the incident is ongoing."

UPDATE 3.45pm:

Highways England has confirmed one land between junctions 23 and 24 has reopened.

Delays are starting to ease, however driver are still advise to allow plenty of extra time for journeys.

UPDATE 4.31pm:

The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to the scene at around 2pm this afternoon.

A spokesman said: "Two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle attended.

"One female of an unknown age was taken to Colchester General Hospital."

UPDATE 4.37pm: 

Essex Travel News has confirmed all lanes have now reopened.
