AWARDS and donations were presented to community volunteers and groups at Maldon Town Council’s annual town meeting.

The council held the meeting at Maldon Town Hall on Market Hill last Thursday.

Jeanette Stilts, mayor of Maldon, presented Sholto Morton with the Mayor’s Award for Services to the Community.

Mr Morton has organised the annual poppy appeal within the town for several years, and during the presentation he thanked his dedicated team of volunteers for their support and hard work when accepting the award on their behalf.

The mayor has spent the last few months organising fundraising activities to give away to district based charities, and presented cheques from the fundraising to various groups on the night.

These included the Maldon and Dengie Stroke Support and Carers’ Group, Maldon Drama Group, Age Concern Maldon, St Mary’s Church Organ appeal, the Maldon Society, Essex Air Ambulance, Steam Tug Brent Trust and Maldon in Bloom.

The meeting also hosted guest speaker Assistant Chief Constable Andy Prophet, who articulated the challenges that are faced by Essex Police, responding to a range of concerns from residents about the policing in Maldon.

Members of the public are invited to the council’s annual meeting and mayor making ceremony on Monday May 14, at 7.30pm in the town hall.
