THOUSANDS of people looking after a loved one with cancer are missing out on vital benefits - simply because they do not realise what help they are entitled to.

Essex Macmillan Benefits Advice Service hopes to fill the gaps in carer's knowledge by hosting a drop-in clinic tomorrow (Tuesday, November 21) at Colchester Hospital.

The event takes place between 10am and 3.30pm at the Macmillan Pod, ahead of Carers Rights Day on Friday.

A Macmillan benefits advisor, benefits support officer and a support worker from Action for Family Carers and Colchester Council, will be on hand to answer any questions about carers' rights and the sort of financial support available to people affected by cancer.

Wendy Bailey, services project manager for South and East England, said: “If you are looking after a loved one with cancer, you may have extra costs such as transport, heating or a special diet for them. You may have given up work or reduced your hours to care.

"Our event will provide vital advice and information to anyone looking after a family member or friend with cancer to make sure they know their rights to financial and practical support.”

Councillor Tina Bourne, responsible for housing and communities, said: “It’s incredibly important cancer patients and their carers are aware of the financial support available to them, during what is a very difficult time.

"I would encourage carers to come along to this event, where our friendly Welfare Benefits Team will be available throughout the day offering free advice and information.”

  • There are almost 1.5million carers supporting a loved one through cancer in the UK. However, less than half are accessing support. For more information, click here
