POLICE officers who managed to talk a teenager down from a bridge have been given special commendations.

PCs Neil Brand and Samuel Jones were on patrol in February when they received reports of a girl in distress sitting on the edge of a bridge in Stanway.

The pair rushed to the scene and ensured the girl, aged just 15, received the help she needed.

After developing a rapport they managed to pull her over the barrier to safety.

She was taken to hospital and received treatment.

PC Brand said: “We immediately intervened to prevent the girl from causing harm to herself, engaging her in conversation and doing our best to gain her trust.

"It was really windy and rainy which made conditions difficult but we were determined to bring her to safety.

“We are both very grateful that we were able to help a vulnerable young person in a time of need.

“We just acted as anyone else would have in the same situation."

On Friday, the officers were commended by Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh for their dedication, bravery and professionalism.
