A FRUIT farm is enjoying the sweet taste of success at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Weeley-based Ken Muir Ltd has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show since 1970 and has accumulated more than 30 medals.

The 27-acre Honeypot Farm, in Rectory Road, was set up by the late Ken Muir in 1950 and has served the Queen strawberries numerous times over the years.

This year it has been handed the Silver-Gilt award for its strawberries by the Chelsea judges.

Kevin Lynch, director, thanked the whole team for its efforts.

He said: “We strives to present the best show of fruiting strawberries at Chelsea.

“The weather plays an important role, but it’s the dedication of all that enables us to display at the world’s greatest flower show.

“The Silver-Gilt award is an excellent result.”

This year the farm displayed its Cupid strawberries, a new sweeter variety with a dark leaf.

“The Cupid came on really well this year,” added Mr Lynch.

“We were praised for our effort – it is very difficult to grow good strawberries here. We missed getting a gold medal by just one point.

“The judging is fair – it has been incredibly hot at Chelsea and we’re just trying to keep them from over ripening.”

Mr Lynch said this year’s Chelsea Flower how has attracted thousands of people and that he expected it to be a record-breaking year.

The farm is open to give advice on fruit growing Monday to Saturday from 8am to 4pm.
