POLICE brought a 32 mile car chase to a dramatic end in a high street using a stinger device.

A car was reported stolen from Richmond Drive, Jaywick, at about 2.40am on Wednesday and later spotted in Colchester.

Officers pursued the car to Billericay High Street, where the tyre-shredding device was put across the road, bringing the car to a stop.

The driver ran off but was detained by police dogs.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “A man is in custody for questioning following a police pursuit last night in the early hours of this morning.

“Police were called to reports of a vehicle being stolen from Richmond Drive, Jaywick, at around 2.40am.

“A car matching the description was later spotted in Colchester and pursued to Billericay.

“When officers attempted to stop the car, the occupant fled and a police dog was deployed.

“A 39-year-old man of no fixed address in the Basildon area, was arrested at West Ridge, Billericay, at 3.40am.

“The man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle and currently remains in custody for questioning.”
