COLCHESTER Hospital has treated 95 per cent of accident and emergency patients within four hours for the first time in more than a year.

The last time it hit the national target was in April 2015.

Trust chairman David White told the hospital’s governors: “Staff have stepped up to the mark.

“Over the last 17 or 18 days there has been only one day where we haven’t hit that 95 per cent.

“What that says to Nick Hulme (chief executive) and I is the salvation of the trust is within the staff’s limits.”

The hospital introduced a “red to green” scheme to free up beds more quickly, which is achieved by better communication between departments.

Mr White said he thought such targets are important.

He said: “It is a window into how the hospital is working as a whole.”
