A MAN has died following a car crash in the early hours of this morning.

The accident happened in Freebournes Road, Witham, just before 1.20am.

The man, who is from Chelmsford and is believed to be in his 20s or 30s, was the front seat passenger.

The two other people in the car, also believed to be in their 20s or 30s, were injured and have been taken to Broomfield Hospital.

The road remains closed between Stepfield Road and Moss Road.

Police officers have launched an appeal for information about the accident.

UPDATE 9.15am

One lane of the road has now reopened. Police officers are still at the scene directing traffic.

There are slight delays in the area.

Highways maintenance teams are also at the scene.

UPDATE 11.23am 

Workers on the industrial estate said they saw the car being pulled out from underneath one of the trailers, which was parked along the side of the road. 

Police have left the scene and both lanes of the road are now open. 

UPDATE 11.55am

The East of England Ambulance Service was called at 1.16am this morning. 

They sent three ambulance crews, an ambulance officer, a hazardous area response team and the London Air Ambulance. 

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "Sadly one patient died at the scene.

"Two other patients were treated at the scene, one with a suspected broken arm and the other with head injuries.

"Neither seem to be life threatening injuries."
