A TEENAGER was arrested after firefighters and police were called to a school to get him down from a roof.

The boy had climbed on to the roof of Essex Fresh Start School in Church Street, Witham, and was seen flinging tiles down to the ground.

He was eventually brought to safety but a police negotiator sustained a cut to the back of the head during the incident.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Police were contacted shortly after 11.35am on Monday, February 1, with reports of a disturbance at premises in Church Street, Witham.

"Police negotiators engaged with the boy and a 100 metre cordon was put in place for the public’s safety.

"The teenager was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and brought down from the roof by about 2.20pm.

"While he was being detained, one of the officers was injured and suffered a minor cut to his head."
