A STUDENT took a photo of himself everyday for three years to show his transition from a girl into a man.
Transgender Jamie Raines, 21, started taking testosterone tables when he was 17 and decided to take a daily photo to document the changes to his body.
He has turned them into a video which shows his changing facial features through 1,400 photos.
Jamie, of the Hythe, Colchester, who is studying for a masters in psychology at Essex University, will feature in a Channel 4 show Girls to Men on Tuesday at 10pm.
He said: “I wanted to do something to document my transition. At the time I was doing an A-level in photography so I combined the two.
“The changes were quite slow in the beginning and then three months in I had my first voice drop which was quite exciting.
“My body shape changed quite a lot as well and I gained a bit of weight.
“There have been a couple of negative things as well. My hair line is receding. I’m only 21 so it’s a bit worrying, but I’m willing to accept that.”
As well as the testosterone he has had top surgery – a mastectomy and chest remodelling procedure.
Jamie realised he was transgender when he was just a child.
He said: “When I was four I thought I was like any other boy. As I grew older I started noticing there were differences.
“I found puberty quite difficult. It wasn’t a nice time.
“I went to college and felt I was able to express myself more. I started to become more masculine.”
Jamie, who attended St Mary’s School in Colchester, was approached to appear on the Channel 4 show via his YouTube page, which has 11,000 subscribers.
His section of the documentary has been put together using his self-recorded YouTube clips.
He said: “I’ve been overwhelmed with the positive response it’s had.”
