Highways bosses are considering "drastic" plans to create a Braintree bypass allowing most motorists to avoid the notorious Galleys Corner, the Times can reveal.
Project managers at Highways England have been consulting with stakeholders in Braintree about funding a bigger junction nearby in order for the A120 to pass by Galleys Corner, allowing it to become a local road.
The proposal, which could form part of the agency's road delivery plan from 2020, should relieve congestion and cut the number of accidents.
