ABOUT £10million will be spent building schools in Colchester.
The money is being spent on a primary school in the new Severalls development and on Market Field School, in Elmstead Market.
Building work officially began at Severalls on Monday after a ground-breaking ceremony.
The school will be run by sponsor REAch2, which runs five academies in Essex.
It will have 14 classrooms and two halls and is set to open in September, 2016.
Essex County Council revealed the £7.1million school would be called Camulos Academy in reference to the town’s Roman heritage.
Mr Finch said: “The school in Severalls will have spaces for 420 pupils, so it is a significant investment, but will bring significant benefit.”
According to the latest Essex County Council figures, Colchester could be as many as 415 spaces short for secondary school pupils and 360 spaces short for primary pupils in eight years time.
