Shoppers could be driven away from Halstead if half-hour parking on the High Street is introduced, it has been claimed.

In a new consultation, which begins today and lasts until June, Braintree Council is considering changing the one hour limits on the parking bays.

It is proposed 60 per cent will have a two-hour limit and 40 per cent will be just for half an hour.

A council spokesman said: “The proposal put forward looks to continue the free high street parking, but replace the one hour restriction with half-hour and two hour bays, so catering for those shopping in the town and those running a quick errand.

“In addition we would also look to reline the parking areas, to allow more cars to park in the same area.”
