A CYCLIST wants to highlight the “stupid” plans by highways bosses to ditch a traffic light crossing, by filming how difficult it is to cross the road.

Wolf Simpson wore a head camera while attempting to get across the Cymbeline Way crossing at about 5.30pm on a weekday.

Rodney Bass, Essex County Council highways boss plans to shut the crossing, which stops traffic entering and leaving Westway roundabout, because it causes major congestion morning and night.

He has also said it would benefit Colchester’s forthcoming park-and-ride scheme. But Mr Simpson said the video shows how difficult it will be to cross the road.

It features Mr Simpson walking up and down the busy road while there is an almost constant stream of traffic.

He said: “The idea just doesn’t work. It’s stupid. I wanted to show that this is a real risk to people.”

Mr Simpson added roads bosses have recommended cyclists and pedestrians should use the underpass, which runs from Westway to Rotary Way instead.

But he pointed out: “You would be following the whole roundabout around and you would still have to cross at least one dangerous carriageway.”
