A man in his 50s has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a timber roof collapsed on him.

The ambulance service sent a rapid response vehicle, one ambulance and the Essex Air Ambulance to the scene in Coombe Road, Southminster after they were called at 8.45am today.

The man suffered injuries to his chest and lower leg, which were described as serious but not life-threatening.

He was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford by land ambulance for further care.
