Police are appealing for witnesses after a road crash left two people dead and two seriously injured.

Two cars were involved in a head-on collision on Gosfield Road, Braintree, just before 5pm yesterday.

The driver of a blue Ford Fiesta, who died at the scene, has been named by police as David Bradley, 30, of Beckers Green Road, Braintree.

The rear seat passenger of the Polo, who also died at the scene, was James Simmons, 18, of Hillside Gardens, Braintree.

The driver of the Polo, a man in his 20s from Gosfield, was airlifted to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, where he remains in a critical condition.

The front seat passenger of the Polo, a 16-year-old girl from Braintree, was taken to Broomfield Hospital with serious injuries.

The front seat passenger of the Fiesta, a woman in her 20s from Suffolk, was taken by ambulance to Broomfield Hospital with serious injuries.

The road was closed while initial investigations were carried out at the scene and the vehicles were recovered. It reopened at about 10pm.
