A-STATE-of-the-art play centre looks set to open in north Colchester, with the creation of at least 12 jobs.

James Goody and Merri Applegate, of Wivenhoe, plan to invest a six-figure sum into transforming a unit at Easter Park, Axial Way, into a play venue to be called Epic.

The couple, who each have two children, have submitted a planning application which would transform the 1,227 sq metre premises. The venue would include an indoor kart track, a four-lane slide, baby and toddler play zones and a zip wire.

Mr Goody said they wanted to create a “state-of-the-art”

venue aimed at children up to age 12.

The venue will also boast free WiFi, refreshments and newspapers and magazine to read. Parties will also be offered.

He added: “What we are trying to do is create a coffee shop environment within a play centre, so it is more parentfriendly.”

Mr Goody said they were encouraged by the location as Colchester Council has a vision to make north Colchester a hub for leisure.

He said: “From all our research we have done, we are absolutely convinced this is right for Colchester.”

Opening hours would be 9.30am to 6.30pm, seven days a week, including bank holidays.

There would be 35 parking spaces.

The pair said they have been searching for a suitable venue in Colchester for 18 months.

They previously worked together for Konica Minolta, where they were both on the technology firm’s board of directors.

The site was used a distribution centre for sports protein drinks until August this year.

Colchester Council aims to decide on the application, for change of use, by November 14.
