A community is celebrating after their new church extension was completed following five years of fundraising.

The Friends of St George’s Church group have had to raise over £18,000 for the new demountable extension, which contains a kitchen, toilets and meeting room.

The community project was aided by a donation of nearly £10,000 after Row 4a Reason, the basin’s sponsored rowing event, nominated the project as its chosen cause.

The new building was swung into place at the beginning of the month and it is hoped it will provide a community hub as well as a location for meetings and events, although fundraising to furnish the building is still on-going.

A spokesman for the Friends of St George’s Church group said: “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of all who have offered donations and expertise to the project.”
