Villagers fear being swamped by new houses after developers confirmed they hope to build 150 new homes.
Taylor Wimpey is preparing a planning application for a development near Alresford rail station.
Parish councillors believe a raft of new homes could be approved due to the lack of a local plan – a blueprint of planning guidelines – in Tendring district.
The district council has been forced to abandon its existing plan after being told it was likely to be rejected by the Government.
Taylor Wimpey wants to build in a field in the centre of the village, to the west of Station Road and the south of Cockaynes Lane.
