Road users are being advised to avoid the A12 near Shenfield after an accident on the northbound carriageway involving a lorry and a van.
The accident took place at about 2.15pm between junction 11 for the M25 and junction 12 for Shenfield.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "Motorists are advised to try to avoid the Brook Street interchange with the A12.
"A DAF truck was in collision with the central reservation of the road at just before 2.15pm between junctions 11 and 12.
"The 60-year-old driver of vehicle was taken to Broomfield Hospital by ambulance suffering from minor injuries.
"The collision has caused damage to the central reservation and the lamp columns which has affected both carriageways.
"A Vauxhall Combi van was also in collision with some of the debris. The driver has not been injured.
"One lane is now open both sides to try and ease traffic congestion but motorists are asked to try and avoid the area during the rush hour.
"Highways officers are working to clear up the debris."
