A SERVICE that has helped small businesses get off to a flying start has been shortlisted for a national award.
Braintree Council and Business Development Services (BDS), which has offices in Braintree and Dunmow, are finalists in the prestigious Municipal Journal Achievement Awards in the public private partnership achievement of the year category.
Russell Everard, the council's head of enterprise and culture, said: "One of the key successes of the service is the number of businesses that it actively supports in the start up phase.
"Last year 137 new businesses started. We are very aware that somewhere in the region of 87 per cent of those will survive after three years, which is a remarkable achievement."
The Municipal Journal Achievement Awards ceremony is in June.

By the middle of last month, Essex Fire and Rescue Service had spent more than 30 per cent of its annual fuel budget.
