FAMILY and friends saddled up for a charity bike ride inspired by a loved one who is battling cancer.

Kevin Riley, of Aetheric Road in Braintree, and his band of 32 cyclists rode 14 miles along the Flitch Way and back on Saturday in aid of Farleigh Hospice and Macmillan nurses.

They started at the Queen's Head pub in Rayne Road, Braintree and took in the sights at Rayne and Felsted, with pit stops at the village pubs, before returning to the Queen's Head for a barbecue.

The oldest rider was Margaret Varley, 67, and the youngest William Humphreys, six.

Mr Riley, a slaughterman at C Humphreys and Sons, was inspired by his aunt Lee Barbary, 54.

The English teacher of Mendip Road in Chelmsford was diagnosed with breast cancer last March. But after having treatment, doctors then discovered she had bone cancer at Christmas.

Mrs Barbary is now undergoing chemotherapy again and receives support from both Farleigh Hospice and Macmillan nurses.
