BT has announced plans to axe more than 30 phone boxes in Halstead and the surrounding areas.

Many of these "lifelines" could disappear from villages, as well as several kiosks in or near Halstead.

BT wants to remove 32 phone boxes in the area because it says 60 per cent of payphones are unprofitable.

Halstead town councillors were alerted to the plans on Saturday (26/04/08).

Cllr Jackie Pell said: "I know in this day and age people have mobile phones, but not everybody.

"I still feel that payphones are essential, particularly in the rural villages.

"They rely on them more than anything, because a lot of mobiles don't work.

"It's a lifeline."

The consultation period will close on July 2, 2008.
