Most people slow down by the time they reach their 70s, but Les and Madge Littler will hit the road in a fundraising challenge.

Having both survived cancer, the Halstead residents have set themselves the goal of travelling from Penzance to Carlisle by bus.

The 73 year olds felt "it was about time they did something further to support Cancer Research UK" and realised "this was the sort of challenge they could meet."

Mr Littler came up with the latest fundraising idea following the introduction of OAP bus passes covering the whole of England.

On May 19, the Trinity Road residents will take a train to Penzance.

The following day, the Halstead History Society members will board one of 24 local buses.

Their 596-mile journey will take them through 25 towns.

Collection tins and/or sponsor forms can be found at The Bull Hotel, Dickens Restaurant, Whispers Wine Bar and Prego in Halstead.

Locations in Greenstead Green include The Farm Cafe, Post Office and Patisserie .
